Tax Return Rejection Codes

When the IRS or state authorities reject your tax return, it typically requires a minor correction. Simply refer to the rejection code provided to understand how to amend your tax return and re-file at no additional cost.

These codes apply whether you used eFile.com or another platform, though the specific steps for correction may vary based on your filing method.

Understanding Common Rejection Codes

Mismatched personal information

The IRS often rejects returns when the taxpayer's details like SSN, name, or birth date don't match those with the Social Security Administration. This is a frequent issue that prompts rejections.

Previously accepted return

This occurs if a return has already been filed using the same taxpayer identification number. Such rejections also arise from identity theft incidents.

Dependent claimed on another return.

The return may be rejected if two taxpayers claim the same dependent due to misunderstandings or communication issues between custodial and non-custodial parents.

Duplicate filings by dependents

If a dependent who has already filed a return is claimed on another taxpayer’s return, it will be rejected.

Employer identification errors

If an EIN provided does not match IRS records, it can lead to a return rejection.
